Bobby Mizia, a former football and baseball 1st team All Catholic athlete at LaSalle High School and captain of the 1975 Temple University football team, is currently faced with a very serious medical problem. This past December Bobby contracted some type of staph infection which developed into an abscess on his cervical spine. Emergency surgery was performed to remove the abscess and eliminate the pressure on his spinal cord but as a result of the complications of this infection, Bobby is paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. He was hospitalized on December 19th, initially at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and then transferred to Magee Rehab Hospital, and has since been discharged.
and is being treated on an out patient basis.
As one can imagine Bobby’s entire life, as well as that of his family, has been turned upside down he will have to adapt to an entirely different lifestyle which will include major changes to his current home to make it handicap accessible. He will have to continue, at home, the rigorous physical and occupational therapy that began during his stay at Magee. His family and friends will also have to lend assistance in helping him meet his daily needs. Anyone who knows Bobby Mizia and knows his physical and mental toughness as well as his strong work ethic and determination, will not be surprised when Bobby attains his goal of walking once again.
Many of the changes Bobby will have to make as he prepares to return home to his family will involve substantial costs. He will no longer be able to ply his trade as a member of the Insulators and Asbestos Workers Local 14 and will need the help of his many friends and union brothers from the Building Trades. He will also need the help and generosity of his former teammates and classmates from La Salle College High School and Temple University as well as his many friends from Tacony, Northeast Philadelphia, and the Father Judge High School Community.
